The Lab

The Phonology/Phonetics Lab investigates human speech. It provides resources for making high quality recordings, speech analysis, and tools for developing experiments and computational models relating to human speech. The kinds of questions asked include:

  • How can we characterize the sound patterns of different languages?
  • What principles account for the variety of sound patterns of different languages?
  • What role do various factors play in how a child might learn the sound pattern of his or her or language?
  • What is the relationship between perception and production of speech?

Check out the online resources the lab has to offer!

Jeff Heinz and Irene Vogel are the primary investigators working in the lab.

Projects

  1. Variation and learning stress patterns in the world's languages.
  2. Learning long distance agreement patterns (e.g., consonantal and vowel harmony).
  3. Learning phonotactic patterns simultaneously with speech segmentation.
  4. Perception and production of Romanian palatalization
  5. Perception and production of compound versus phrasal stress
  6. Acquisition of compound versus phrasal stress
  7. Identifying units of phonological planning
  8. The sound pattern of Kwara'ae (Austronesian)
